Snippet #2:

“Come.” She stood. “Let’s go out for some air, and I’ll tell you all about it. There is a terrace outside,” she added in case he didn’t remember the layout of their host’s home.
He rose, his posture straight as a tin soldier. The lamplight shone on his dark hair, regulation-short rather than stylish, but it suited his new military bearing. “I have a feeling I’m going to regret even listening to your idea.”
“This one shouldn’t involve you climbing anywhere.”
“‘Shouldn’t?’”
“Trust me.”
He let out an exhale that might have been a suppressed moan, but he offered his elbow. As she wound her arm around his, a small part of her mind registered how broad and tall he’d gotten during his absence. Nine years had changed a boy into a man. It had also changed Rowena nearly to the status of an old maid, but she chose not to dwell on that. Besides, lots of ladies married older than the age of twenty-three, did they not?
At the edge of the terrace, she looked back inside the drawing room, chewing her lower lip. How best to broach the topic? She lowered her voice. “Let’s steal the bells of all the cows and tie them around the necks of that flock of geese.”
