Snippet:

The man had time to scream and drop his hammer as the NTH shot sizzled into his chest. He fell to the ground in a heap of newly dead flesh and did not move, his mouth locked into a distended 'O' shape.

The woman, however, was a different story. She grit her teeth and watched the shot come in. To Stenstrom’s horror, the NTH shot stopped in mid-air and burned like a tiny green sun before her. He felt TK pouring out of her. She had stopped his shot with her mind, only a Sister had such power.

She gasped in wicked delight. “Huh? You like that? Huh?”

Before Stenstrom knew what was happening, she sent the NTH shot back at them. “This is yours, I think! Here!” she cried as the speeding shot hit Gwendolyn square in the chest. She fell backward and dropped her FEDULA as she crashed into the grass.

Autumn/Halloween Countdown Blitz Day Four: The Temple of the Cyrstal Timekeeper by Fiona Ingram

I am a South African children’s author. Up until a few years ago, I was a journalist and editor. Something rather unexpected sparked my new career as an author—a family trip to Egypt with my mother and two young nephews. We had a great time and I thought I’d write them a short story as a different kind of souvenir…. Well, one book and a planned book series later, I had changed careers. I am now on Book 5 of The Chronicles of the Stone adventure series. I also teach online novel writing for aspiring authors and I find that very satisfying.

~ Amazon ~ Facebook ~

Continuing the adventure that ended in Britain just a short while ago, cousins Adam and Justin Sinclair, with their friend Kim Maleka, are now hunting for the third Stone of Power, one of seven mysterious stones lost centuries ago. The third stone might be located in an ancient city, hidden in the depths of the Mexican jungle. When their small plane crashes in the jungle, Adam, Justin, Kim, and James are rescued by an uncontacted tribe. James, who is wounded, must stay behind as the kids, with only a young boy, Tukum, as their guide, make their way through the dense and dangerous jungle to find the city. River rafting on a crocodile-infested river and evading predators are just part of this hazardous task.

Of course, their old adversary Dr. Khalid is close behind as the kids press on in search of the lost city of stone gods. But he is not the worst of their problems. This time Adam will clash with a terrible enemy who adopts the persona of an evil Aztec god, Tezcatlipoca, and is keen to revive the ancient tradition of human sacrifice. Adam, Justin, and Tukum must play a dreadful ball game of life and death and maybe survive. Will they emerge alive from the jungle? Will Dr. Khalid find the third Stone of Power before they do?

Snippet:

Kim let out a piercing scream as a small group of about ten people materialized out of the bushes. They must have been there all the time. Adam was amazed at how they had blended in with the environment. The tribesmen were not much taller than Justin, but they were muscular and looked strong. They wore loincloths and carried spears. Some carried bows. Black paint was daubed across their eye sockets, forming a mask. Tattoos and strange ritual scars ornamented their light-brown skin. Some wore armbands, and decorations around their ankles; a few wore elaborate necklaces of wooden beads. Thick plugs went through most of their earlobes. They all had longish black hair, cut so that the fringes came down to the top of their paint masks. Their dark eyes glittered as they stared back at the trio.

Autumn/Halloween Countdown Blitz Day Three: Fusion by TJ Amberson

TJ Amberson hails from the Pacific Northwest, where she lives with her husband and nutty cocker spaniel. When she's not writing, TJ might be found enjoying a hot chocolate, pretending to know how to garden, riding her bike, playing the piano, or surfing the Internet for cheap plane tickets. With a love of many genres, TJ Amberson writes sweet romance for adults, and historical fantasy and contemporary sci-fi adventures for teen and mature tween readers.

Alexis Kendall has a pretty typical teenage life: a crush on a cute guy, a loathing of chemistry, and a tendency to stumble into embarrassing mishaps. But everything changes after an unexpected discovery in chemistry class gives Alexis incredible powers.

With her powers rapidly growing beyond her control, Alexis races to her teacher, Mr. Haber, for help. A chilling twist of events leaves Mr. Haber and his young assistant, Noah Weston, no choice but to reveal to Alexis a secret. And suddenly, Alexis is faced with a decision that will change her life forever.

Snippet:

A man with thick glasses raised his hand. "So how does that tie in to what happened to Victor? And who was the girl? Was she involved with The Organization or not?"

Jackie glanced at Xander before she spoke. "Well, Peter, our theory is that Number 407 is . . . inside a human being. After seeing the video, we think It is within the girl, Alexis."

I understand what 'deafening silence' means now, Xander thought, and one look at Jackie told him she was thinking the same thing.

Snippet:

Outside, the wind had picked up and rain pelted my face as I tried to find him. Where had he gone so quickly? There. I caught movement from the back of the house. No.

“Josh, stop.” But my words were whipped away in the wind. I sprinted toward the garden where this whole mess had started. He was fast, but I was faster. “Josh. Come back to the house. Please.”

He whipped around and clenched his fists to his side, rain pouring down his face, soaking his clothes. His eyes flashed with a fury that made me jerk to a stop. He advanced on me. “Why couldn’t you just leave that book in the well?”

It took everything I had not to step backward. “It wasn’t my fault. I was trying to find that ball. You heard Craig. He wouldn’t leave me alone.”

The seconds felt like hours as we stood staring at each other, waiting for the other one to react. My tears mixed with rain as I took another step forward.

Josh suddenly dropped to his knees and held his head in his hands, sobbing hysterically. I’d never seen him lose his cool like this before. His body shook, and when he looked up at me, his eyes were red. “I just want the voices to go away.”

I crept forward. “Please. I want to help you. Can I do that?”

My heart broke for him, because I’d heard those voices he was talking about. Begging me to help them. Thanking me for freeing them. I’d wondered why I hadn’t heard them for a while. They were full of such … evil. I reached for his hand as Grandma and Mom yelled for me.

“Josh?” I took his hand in mine. “Please look at me.”

He jerked up, and his eyes weren’t right. They were almost completely black, and his smile was twisted into an ugly grin. “Hello, Gwendolyn. We told you we’d be back.”

“No!” I screamed in agony as a pulse of energy flowed from Josh’s hand to mine. It was like our hands had melded together, and I couldn’t let go.

I was thrown to the ground and pain shot through me. The sky went black—no, everything was black. The darkness was all-consuming as something took over my body. I tried to find Josh in the darkness as he laughed in a way I’d never heard before. My heart felt like it was beating through sludge, making it hard to breathe. The pain I’d known from my vision of Josh was nothing like this.

My screams filled my ears until I thought I would explode. And suddenly, it was gone. The pain, the darkness. I slowly uncurled and pushed up off the ground, shivering from the cold rain. It felt like I’d just run a marathon. Josh lay next to me on the ground, and Mom and Grandma stood over us chanting something while waving their hands.

Autumn/Halloween Countdown Blitz Day One: Max's Hallowe'en Adventure; The Shadow of the Witchfinder by Wendy Leighton-Porter

A graduate of Exeter University, Wendy spent 20 years as a teacher of French, Latin and Classical studies before a change of career led her to writing children's fiction. Currently residing in Abu Dhabi, she lives with her husband and beautiful Tonkinese cat.

Wendy's ""Shadows from the Past"" time-travel adventures, featuring 3 children and a rather special cat called Max, are aimed at the Middle Grade age group. This award-winning series also includes several shorter novellas that see Max the talking Tonkinese cat undertaking solo missions. Now working on the 18th book in the series, ""The Shadow of the Shifting Sands"", Wendy hopes that her love of history, myth and legend will rub off on her young readers as she takes them on a magical mystery tour through the past.

In his fifth solo mini-adventure, Max the talking Tonkinese cat, the feline hero of the SHADOWS FROM THE PAST series travels back in time to the mid-seventeenth century.

He doesn’t understand how this has happened until he recognises his surroundings and realises it isn't the first time he’s been to this place. Why has he been brought to this tumbledown cottage in the middle of nowhere? All is about to be revealed…

In 17th century Essex, at a time when most people believed in witchcraft, the name Matthew Hopkins was enough to strike fear into the heart of many a woman who lived alone with only a pet cat for company… for Hopkins was the Witchfinder General.

The 15th book in the Shadows from the Past series takes the time-travelling foursome back to the year 1646. It isn’t Max’s first visit to the village of Mistley Thorn, but this time his friends Jemima, Joe and Charlie are by his side.
Their mission is to bring an end to Hopkins’ campaign of terror. Will they succeed, or might this prove to be their most dangerous challenge yet? "

The Shadow of the Witchfinder
Snippet 1

Max reared up on his hind legs, casting an unnaturally huge shadow behind him – it must have been a trick of the light. Perhaps that would also explain the strange halo that glimmered around its outline? Glancing over his shoulder, the sight of the spectral shape looming tall almost made Max jump out of his skin, before he realised it was his own shadow. Gosh, was that really him? How did he look so big? Max didn’t understand what came over him at that moment, but a surge of heat flooded his body, as if fire was racing through his veins, and he felt suddenly bolder. He swiped a large paw through the air, flexing his claws in a menacing gesture. A loud bang of thunder came out of nowhere and the sky darkened with the eerie half-light that comes just before a storm. Max’s coat crackled with electricity, his fur bristling as he turned back towards the crowd.

Snippet 2

The sky was almost black now, as dark as night, the storm still raging overhead. Jemima shivered, her flesh prickling at the feeling that something strange was in the air. With Max in her arms, she and Charlie crept towards the edge of the green while everyone was busy watching the Witchfinder being manhandled in the direction of the water. They were almost at the entrance to the lane leading to the woods when someone turned and caught sight of the two children slinking away, their silhouettes spotlit by a sudden flash of lightning.

A shout went up. ‘There they are, the boy wizard and Hopkins’ creature. They’re getting away. Stop them!’

Audio Book Tour: The Collar and the Cavvarach by Annie Douglass Lima

A GRIPPING YOUNG ADULT ADVENTURE!

About the Story:

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is desperate to see his little sister freed. But only victory in the Krillonian Empire's most prestigious tournament will allow him to secretly arrange for Ellie's escape. Dangerous people are closing in on her, however, and Bensin is running out of time. With his one hope fading quickly away, how can Bensin save Ellie from a life of slavery and abuse?

What is the Collar for, and What is a Cavvarach?

The story is set in a world very much like our own, with just a few major differences. One is that slavery is legal there. Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone. Any slave attempting to escape faces the dilemma of how and where to illegally get their collar removed (a crime punishable by enslavement for the remover).

Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil. It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with "have a rack"), an unsharpened weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge. Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades. You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds.

More About the Story

Set in a world alarmingly like our own, The Collar and the Cavvarach is the story of fourteen-year-old Bensin, a slave, whose status is made obvious to everyone by the steel collar locked around his neck. A martial artist who competes to win money for his owner, Bensin fights in tournaments with a cavvarach. But his greatest battle is the struggle to protect his little sister from the horrors of legalized slavery in a world where slaves have few rights. Desperate to keep her safe, Bensin struggles to find a means - legal or otherwise - to arrange for her freedom.
