Blog Tour: The Librarian Picks Her Poison by Amber Gilchrist

Amber Gilchrist lives in New Mexico with her husband and six children. She writes YA , Romantic Comedies, and series mysteries. She calls her lifetime of jumping from one job to another 'experience' for her books and not an inability to settle down. Amber loves mysteries and a good, happy romance. She also loves to laugh. Sometimes she likes all of them together.

A fan of quirky movies and indie books, Amber likes to be with her family, is socially inept, and fears strangers and small yippy dogs. She alternates between writing and being a mom. She tries to do both at the same time but her kids don't appreciate being served lunch and told, "This is the hot dog of your discontent." So mostly she writes when everyone else is in bed.

Audrey Scott might be a childrens librarian, but that isnt all she can do. When her best friend, Gretchen Holden, stands accused of a murder, Audrey cant handle doing nothing more than bailing Gretchen out of jail. She has to figure out who really killed Gretchens step-father, a universally hated federal judge.

With a not small list of potential people the judge has wronged, Audrey and her friends have a rough ride ahead of them trying to decide who had a motive, means, and opportunity to put the judge in an early grave. With the help of Derek Hennessy, erstwhile enemy turned very good friend, and her normal crew of cohorts, Audrey wont stop until the threat no longer looms.

I must confess I'm still working on reading through this book and therefore don't know how it's going to end. But from what I've currently read, it's just as fun a ride as the first book in the series.
Once more, Audrey is faced with the challenge of clearing the name someone accused of a crime they didn't commit. This time it's her longtime friend and roommate, Gretchen, who's been accused of killing her step-father, Ted, a federal judge.
Knowing things don't add up, and not at all sure how to proceed, Audrey asks for ATF agent Derek Hennessy's help. Having exchanged messages over the last few months (since her other friend, Foster, was cleared of his accused crime), Audrey didn't know who else to turn to and is a bit surprised when Derek rushes forward to help figure things out. There's only one small glitch in everything, she's actually starting to like the steel-eyed and apparently unapproachable man she almost shot during their previous excursions.
In an almost feverish attempt to clear Gretchen's name, Audrey uncovers a new side of Derek that leaves her speechless but wanting to know more. And, with the help of her other friends, including her brother, they rush to find a way to prove Gretchen innocent.

This is a fun story with serious moments that deal with things that aren't necessarily easy for everyone to handle, including issues of abuse, tragedy, and addiction. Amber does give a warning at the beginning of the book to expect these things, and the further warning that some things will be a bit "heavier" than in the previous book. Some of the characters' pasts are quite tragic, but it is all woven into the story in a seamless way that makes the discovery, even if somewhat alarming, a delicious journey to read.

I give it four out of five stars.

Top Ten List
1.     I've been to lots of foreign countries, including Germany, China, and Mexico among others.

2.  I have six kids, and yes that is a lot

3.  I was on a TV show in the early 90s.

4.  I used to pretend I was a fox/mermaid combination whenever my friends pretended to be superheroes.

5.  My first book was written in the 80s and the heroes name was Marvin.  I don't know why I thought this was a good idea.  Thankfully, it was lost many years ago.

6.  I have a weird autoimmune disorder that makes me potentally allergic to literally almost anything.  And then then the next day I won't be allergic to that particular thing anymore.  It's sounds fake, but it's not.  It's called MCAS.

7.  I was a musical theater major my freshman year of college.

8.  I don't really have a bucket list.  But if I did the only thing that would be on it is going places.

9.  I don't really watch TV or movies.  They require a lot of attention for me and it always ends up feeling like a chore.  There's probably only half a dozen shows I've actually seen every episode of, my favorite being Chuck.

10.  I LOVE true crime.  Like in a way that is maybe slightly unhealthy .  I listen to so many true crime podcasts.

Christmas Countdown Blitz Day Fifteen: Lost Shepherd by Michael I Judson

“Who were THOSE shepherds, and why were they so favored?” That one question stirred the imagination of author Michael I. Judson and led to the creation of Lost Shepherd, the fictional backstory of the first witnesses to the birth of the precious Babe of Bethlehem. After you read Lost Shepherd, watch for his answers to other compelling questions (his next books!)

When he’s not writing, he has a large family to love, gardens to grow, fun places to see, ancestors to discover, and even chickens to raise! He also has a full-time job that occupies the bulk of his waking hours. Though still a few years off, retirement beckons with aspirations of writing (with all the fun imagining and discovery that goes with it) becoming his full-time pursuit.

~ Facebook

Just who were the shepherds that were singled out from among earth's inhabitants to hear the angelic announcement of Christ's birth? What made them so special, or what uniquely qualified them to be His first witnesses? The Bible tells us very little about them. Now there is an answer!
Eleazar grows up awash in a culture of shepherding, but not among ordinary sheep. No, the flocks he and his companions tend are destined for sacrifice on the altar of the great temple at Jerusalem. Like his fathers before him, his life's work fuels the faith of a nation that tirelessly awaits the signs of their long-foretold Messiah. But unforeseen circumstances lead Eleazar away from his purposeful existence and onto a path of doubt and life-altering decisions that threaten to destroy both his faith and his future. Only the miraculous power of the Christ Child can reclaim him and restore to him to a life of hope and peace—and to an understanding of his importance as a shepherd in Israel.
Lost Shepherd is a tale of real hope and redemption, of faith lost and reclaimed. Let the story transport you back in time as you discover anew the timeless healing power found only in the Savior Jesus Christ.

Snippet:

As the boys were jockeying for position to get the best view and rapidly pointing out landmarks they had seen the day before, neither was aware of the door opening in the lavish residence behind them.
“Who are you?” a young voice asked.
Startled, both boys instantly wheeled around, finding themselves mere feet away from what they both would later agree was the most beautiful creature either of them had ever laid eyes on.
The young girl, still wiping sleep from her large green eyes, stood above them in the elevated doorway looking like an angel from Heaven. The sun had just reached the front of the home and shone on her ebony black hair and radiated from her shimmering white silk nightclothes. The scene so overpowered the boys that they had no words in reply to the girl’s question.
“Well, who are you?” she impatiently repeated.
Nathanael was the first to gather his wits and responded, “Uh, Nathanael, that’s me. And, uh, Eleazar, that’s him,” he said pointing to his companion.
“OK, but who are you and why are you here?” she demanded in faux exasperation.
“Shepherds,” Eleazar blurted, intimidated out of his young mind, but determined not to be left out of this most crucial of conversations. “Friends of Simeon.”
“Well, shepherds, you’re making too much noise,” huffed the girl who clearly considered herself a lady. “Besides, you smell funny!” With her business concluded, the nameless dream turned and went back inside her home, pulling the door shut behind her.
The boys’ eyes watched intently until the latch shut tight, then, with confused looks on their faces, each lifted an arm and began sniffing to see if what she had said was true. Convinced she was being overly sensitive, the boys smiled at each other, then giggling, ran back to the familiar surroundings of Simeon’s home. But while Nathanael was quickly on to the next thing that crossed his mind, Eleazar’s impression from the encounter would stay with him for a very long time.
Re-entering through Simeon’s front door, the boys found the old man shuffling around his kitchen, busily stoking the fire in order to prepare the morning meal for his guests.
“Ah, there you are!” he cheerily exclaimed. “And what adventure have you already been up to this beautiful morning?”
“Oh we’ve just been looking around at some of the sights,” Nathanael responded. “And we met a girl,” he added casually.
“A girl? At this hour?” Simeon asked.
“Yeah. She said we were being too loud, but we were hardly making any noise at all.”
“Well where did this girl live?” the curious old man asked.
“Down the street that way,” Nathanael said, pointing toward the girl’s home.
“Oh, so you met Dinah, did you?”
“Dinah?” Eleazar asked, quickly joining the conversation.
“Yes, she’s the daughter of Silas, Jerusalem’s most prominent gem dealer,” Simeon responded. “She’s becoming quite a beautiful young lady and very refined.”
“What does refined mean?” Nathanael asked.
“It means she thinks we smell bad,” Eleazar lamented.
Laughing, Simeon asked, “Did she say something about the way you two smell?”
The boys both nodded.
“Well don’t take it too personally. Dinah has been raised to speak her mind, but she’s really a nice person when you get to know her. I think she takes after her father quite a bit.”

"Recently widowed Rae Cavanaugh just survived the worst birthday of her life. She and her two young children must now face a holiday season filled with so many reminders of what they've lost. But when a coworker who’s raising his young nephew moves next door, Rae discovers that the support of a good friend, and the gift of a child, can bring back some of the joy of the season.

**A Novelette**"

Snippet:

They spent the afternoon sorting the boxes. That’d been another bit of Amelia’s advice, marking the boxes by room. Rae had taken the children into Jayden’s room while Dylan worked at setting up his computer and sound system in the living room.
For some reason, Beth had decided she wanted to play wherever he was. When he went into the kitchen with a box, she’d followed him. Then he’d moved one to the bathroom, and she’d tagged along. When he’d returned to the living room, his little shadow came along. Rae had collected her for a diaper change, but then Beth resumed her search for Dylan again.
He paused, keyboard in hand, and watched the toddler playing with a toy. Was she drawn to him because he was a man and she missed the man in her life? How did a small child who couldn’t comprehend death handle the reality of it? All the poor kid knew was that her daddy wasn’t there anymore.

Christmas Countdown Blitz Day Thirteen: Melody by Caroline Clemmons

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To compensate for this illogical error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains in a tiny office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their dog and three rescued indoor cats as well as providing nourishment outdoors for squirrels, birds, and other critters.

The over fifty titles she has created in her pink cave have made her an Amazon bestselling author and won several awards. She writes sweet to sensual romances about the West, both historical and contemporary as well as time travel and mystery. Her series include the Kincaids, McClintocks, Stone Mountain Texas, Bride Brigade, Texas Time Travel, Texas Caprock Tales, Loving A Rancher, and Pearson Grove as well as numerous single titles and contributions to multi-author sets. When she’s not writing, she loves spending time with her family, reading her friends’ books, lunching with friends, browsing antique malls, checking Facebook, and taking the occasional nap.

Such a tiny lie…

Desperation drove her…

She couldn’t know the risk…

After the death of her grandmother, Melody Fraser must quickly leave what has been her home in South Carolina. There are those who think she murdered her Nana Fraser. She’s innocent but there’s talk about arrest and prosecution. To escape, this Southern Belle agrees to become a mail-order bride in far away Montana. Several of her friends will be living in the same town. Traveling so far to marry a man she’s never met is daunting. Surely things will work out, won’t they?
Nicholas “Nick” Walker is a doctor from Gettysburg whose wife and children were killed when mortar fire destroyed their home. Eager to escape the memories and ravages of the Civil War, he buys a medical practice in Montana Territory. He wants a competent nurse who can assist him with operations and care for patients as his plans expand for a hospital. He wants a well-organized wife to keep him company and start a family. With his usual efficiency, he combines the two into one job description when he requests a mail-order bride. What will it take to teach Nick that—although she isn’t what he expected—Melody is exactly what he needs?

Snippet:

She stepped down and smoothed the trip-worn skirt of her gray poplin travel suit. There was no way to brush off the grime from her travels.
She was grateful to her friends who had shared their clothes when her home burned. Even though this suit was nowhere as nice or well fitting as hers had been, she was lucky to have the costume. There she went again. No use thinking of the pastshe was getting a fresh start.
Now that the stage had stopped, the crisp air was free of dust. A light breeze fanned her face. She hoped her groom was on hand to meet her.
Her stomach heaved and she feared shed throw up from nerves. The church spire reminded her shed soon be getting marriedunless hed changed his mind. After sending her all that money, she didnt believe that would happen. A strong baritone asked, Miss Fraser?”
She turned and locked gazes with a smiling, handsome man. Yes, are you Dr. Walker? His appearance shouldnt matter, but she was glad he was nice looking.
Thats correct, Im Nick Walker. The minister is waiting for us. I hope youll agree to wed right away.He picked up her valise with one hand and offered his arm for her to hold.
