Cas lives in the lovely county of Hampshire, southern UK, where she was born. On leaving school she trained for two years before qualifying as horse-riding instructor. During this time she also learned to carriage-drive. She spent thirteen years in the British Civil Service before moving to Rome, Italy, where she and her husband, Dave, lived for three years. They enjoy returning whenever they can. Cas supports many animal charities and owns two rescue dogs. She has a large collection of cacti and loves gardening. She is also a folk singer/songwriter and is currently writing and recording nine folk-style songs to accompany each of her fantasy books. Young Cenaya’s eyes flew open. A bulky swamp creature stood over her bed. Thick leather armor covered its frog-like body. Her scream stuck in her throat. Moonlight beaming through Cenaya’s open window shined off the grob’s bulging, bloodshot eyes.
Run! Cenaya’s mind screeched. Her five-year-old body didn’t move.

The grob’s forked tongue flicked through crooked, decaying teeth. Drool dripped past its thin, green lips onto Cenaya’s nose and rolled down her cheek. The putrid smell made her stomach churn. Grabbing her by the neck, the grob lifted her away from her silky bed sheets.

Cenaya pulled at its slimy fingers. She couldn’t breathe. Soft footsteps entered her room. 

With a shriek, the creature released its grip. Cenaya fell to the ground and rolled away. The grob toppled over.

Cenaya felt a rush of relief. She recognized the arrow sticking out from the back of the grob’s armor.

Synopsis:

Anwen felt her heart palpitate painfully. It squeezed the breath from her lungs as fire coursed through her veins. She gasped out loud as pain similar to her soul scars flared with white-hot agony. The crystal sword fell from her hand, leaving her unarmed.

An image came to her mind as she lay on the ground, her whole body trembling. She could see Tyler wreathing on the ground like an agitated snake. Dark steam issued from a gaping wound across his side and middle. The wound frothed like an angry tide.

Courtney stopped abruptly as the scatterings of a cave-in came into view. “Oh no,” she whispered, one hand to her mouth. Moving slowly, she noticed a body slumped in the hallway. “Please don't be dead,” she said over and over again as she moved closer. She couldn't help but wonder which of her friends lay there, and what had happened to the other.

The closer she came, the more detail came to light. She recognized Tyler Durand as he lay on his side. His light-colored hair lay limp against his head. His skin was unnaturally pale. At least she didn’t think he was dead. It took a lot to kill a dragon. But just beyond him, a little more out of the way, lay Anwen Porter. And she wasn’t moving.
