Christmas Countdown Blitz Day Twelve: Miss Dashwood's Dilemma by Arabella Sheraton

Arabella Sheraton grew up on a diet of Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, and many other writers of that period. From Jane Austen to Georgette Heyer, Arabella has found both enjoyment and inspiration in sparkling, witty Regency novels. She also loves history and generally finds the past more fascinating than the future. Arabella wrote her first Regency romance to entertain her aged mom who loved the genre. Arabella is honoured to share the adventures of her heroes and heroines with readers.

In this delightful traditional Regency romance, Miss Diana Dashwood accepts an invitation to Lady Prescott's Christmas party at Camden House, in the countryside. But things do not go quite as she imagined. Through an unexpected event, she is forced to spend the night in a woodsman's hut with one of the guests. What a scandal! Of course, Sir Gareth Blakely must propose, and he does. Unfortunately, Miss Diana Dashwood has already been engaged to and broken off her engagement from Sir Gareth Blakely after a bitter quarrel. Is it likely she will bow to social pressure and accept his proposal, one made only to save her reputation, and if they marry, does their union stand a chance of survival? And what about the pretty heiress, Miss Jemima Plymstock, whom everyone thinks is the lady Sir Gareth had his eye upon? Headstrong and proud, Miss Diana Dashwood is caught in a dreadful dilemma. A must-read for Regency fans!

Snippet:

“Sir Gareth Blakely, ma’am,” Patsy whispered in tones of awe as she cast a terrified glance at Diana. Mama, who’d been dozing in her chair, her lace cap askew, opened her eyes and looked up, startled.

“What? What did you say about Sir Gareth, Patsy?” Diana froze. Impossible. He could not be here. He would never come here, not after what had transpired between them. She took refuge in indignation. How inconsiderate of him to just spring a visit upon them, knowing there was no reason for any further communication. Any man with a shred of decorum would have penned a polite note and asked to make a suitable time at their convenience. What did he want after all this time?

She opened her mouth, but no words came out. The book she’d been trying to read slipped from her fingers and fell to the floor. She leaned down to pick it up. Just the simple action made her head swim.

A stolen Christmas kiss leaves them bewildered and breathless.

A charming rogue-turned-vicar, Will wants to prove that he left his rakish days behind him, but an accidental kiss changes all his plans. His secret could bring them together...or divide them forever.

Holly has two Christmas wishes this year; finally earn her mother's approval by gaining the notice of a handsome earl, and learn the identity of the stranger who gave her a heart-shattering kiss...even if that stranger is the resident Christmas ghost.

Snippet:

“…I cannot imagine anyone else in the household would have done it.”
“Hmmm. That is a mystery.”
“My only other thought is…well, it’s difficult to even consider.”
“What is it?”
“You might laugh. Or perform that exorcism in truth.”
He tilted his head, his eyes wide. She’d never noticed what a beautiful shade of blue they were, like a clear winter sky.
“Exorcism?” he asked. “Do you think a ghost might have done this?”
She let out a helpless half-laugh. “Either that, or a servant, which seems preposterous.”
He sat back as if pondering, then resumed his task. “That is something to consider. I agree you are right about Lord Bradbury. I do not know him well, but he strikes me as too honorable to engage in that type of behavior.”
“That is my opinion as well.”
They resumed their bough making and bow tying in silence. She could not guess his thoughts, but hers returned to that night in the conservatory, the sublime beauty of that particular intimacy.
The vicar’s voice broke into her thoughts. “I believe you may be right.”
“I’m right?” She blinked.
“It might have been a ghost.”
She almost dropped her ribbon. “Do you truly believe that?”
“Let’s consider all the other possibilities.”
Working side by side, they discussed each male guest, and every servant that they had seen or met in the castle. The vicar, having spent so much time at this castle over the years in his friendship with Joseph, knew all of them. They went back over what few physical attributes she had detected about her mystery man, and compared them to each male in the household. One by one, they eliminated them all now could they imagine why.
Finally, the vicar said, “It is possible that your mystery man mistook you for someone else.”
She winced. “That would be truly terrible. How humiliating.”
He said nothing for a long moment while they worked. Quietly, he asked, “Can you think of anyone we have not yet considered?”
She worked at her bow, trying to get the loops the same size. “No, I can’t.”
A weighted pause. “Then the only other explanation is that some stranger entered the castle.”
She shivered. That thought frightened her more than the others.
While Holly grappled with the prospect, the vicar said what they were both thinking, “Either it was someone else we have not considered, or it was a ghost.”
A ghost.
That would explain why the sensation had been so…unearthly.

Emma Caldwell doesnt hate anyoneexcept for Hugh Warrilow, the man who jilted her older sister and left like a coward to join the army. Men are clearly not to be trusted, and Emma is determined not to give her heart to one. No, a marriage of convenience is the very thing to suit her.

How will he explain that his unforgivable act was motivated by how desperately he loved her? Her icy reception doesnt leave him the chance, nor does it offer much hope for the seasons expectation of peace on earth and goodwill to men. ".

Snippet:

Hugh grimaced. How could he possibly explain it to Emma's satisfaction without betraying his feelings for her? Perhaps he could have done so if those feelings were simply a distant memorya youthful fancy he had outgrown. But the truth was that he still loved her. More than ever, perhaps. He loved her despite how much she despised him.

Annie Flanagan happily moves to Jubilee Springs to work as a maid for Delly Nighy, the daughter of her former New York City employer. For one thing, very few know that her next younger sister, Kate, has signed up with the Colorado Bridal Agency and started writing to an Irish miner, Michael O’Hare, in the same town. Both Annie and her mother back in New York grow concerned when the second man the bridal agency puts Kate in contact with is a miner in Central City. He’s not Irish—and he’s not Catholic. What is worse, she seems to prefer him over Michael.

Kate Flanagan, working as a scullery maid to help support her family, desperately desires to escape the dead-end poverty allotted to Irish women living in the lower east side of Manhattan in New York. Anxious to find a husband out west, she signs up with the bridal agency suggested by her sister. After living with her alcoholic father, she is leery of choosing Irishman Michael O’Hare for a husband. As much as she wants to live near her sister, dare she take the chance Michael O’Hare will not turn out like her da?

Annie and Michael grow closer as they work together in order to persuade Kate to come to Jubilee Springs. She needs to come soon—before winter sets in and disrupts the railroad service that will bring her to the high mountain mining community. Kate agrees to travel to Jubilee Springs before Christmas, but several factors, including the train, threaten to derail this romance.

Michael knows what he promised. He knows what he wants. In the end, will he marry the bride who has captured his heart?

Snippet:

The night before Annie planned to depart, she managed to get Kate alone for a few minutes after her sister returned from her job as a scullery maid with the Van Cleet family. “You’re still writing to the miner in Jubilee Springs, Katie? You think you’re liking him well enough you can see being married to him—maybe falling in love with him?”
Katie shrugged. “I’m liking him, but we haven’t been writing long enough for me to be knowing if he’ll be my choice, now have I? I received another letter from a man in Central City, Colorado. It’s not far west of Denver, but I’m not knowing if it’s on the same train line that would be going to Jubilee Springs. I must be admitting, I’m having good thoughts about his letter. Either way, I’ll not be living so far from you as here in New York, now will I?”
Annie forced her expression not to reflect her concern that the bridal agency had sent her sister a letter from a prospective husband who did not live in Jubilee Springs. One of the things she had counted on when she agreed to move to Colorado to work for Delphinia was that her sister would soon join her.

Great Summer Reads Day 4: Monk's Bride by Caroline Clemmons

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To compensate for this illogical error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains in a tiny office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their three rescued indoor cats as well as providing nourishment outdoors for squirrels, birds, four feral cats, a fox, a raccoon, and two possums.

The books she creates in her pink cave have made her an Amazon bestselling author and won several awards. She writes sweet to sensual romances about the West, both historical and contemporary as well as time travel and mystery. Her series include the Kincaids, McClintocks, Stone Mountain Texas, Bride Brigade, Texas Time Travel, Texas Caprock Tales, Pearson Grove, and Loving A Rancher as well as numerous single titles and contributions to multi-author sets. When she’s not writing, she loves spending time with her family, reading her friends’ books, lunching with friends, browsing antique malls, checking Facebook, and taking the occasional nap.

A destitute widow; a reformed con man; the danger that links them…

Betsie Galloway Hirsch has escaped Memphis with her son. Her gambling husband tricked the wrong people and they’re demanding Betsie pay his debts—or else. She’s come to Kincaid Springs to stay with her mother and seek a safe place for her son. Being so far from her former home, she feels secure. That is, until danger confronts her.

After 34 years alone, Michael “Monk” Magonagle is falling in love with Betsie and is fond of her son. Monk is certain she is not free of the men her late husband cheated. Although he is not a violent man by nature, Monk is willing to fight for Betsie’s safety. He and the men of the Kincaid family prepare to meet the enemy.

How can Betsie and Liam be protected from the approaching danger? Will she and Monk be able to forge a love that endures or will one of them be silenced forever? What toll will the enemy exact?

Snippet:

Betsie leaned down to look at Liam. “Stand right there until I’m in the buggy.”
After helping Betsie onto the front seat beside Sarah, Monk lifted Liam to hand to his mother. The child made a weird noise and threw up his lunch, most of which landed on Monk’s clothes and shoes. Enough landed on Liam’s front that he was a mess too.
“No, please no. Oh, Mr. Magonagle, your clothes.” Betsie hid her face in her hands. When she lowered her hands, tears were in her blue eyes.
“Forgive me for leaving you in such a mess and holding my son.” She stretched out her arms for her son. “Liam, come here.” She took the boy. “I should never have let you eat so much after. . . .” She trailed off as she settled her son on her lap.
Monk figured she almost said after not having enough to eat for so long. He used his handkerchief to dab at his clothes. There was no hope. “Guess I’d better rush home and change clothes.”
Sarah shook her head. “I should think so. Climb in and I’ll drop you there on our way. You don’t want to walk through town looking as you do.”

His house wasn’t really on the way, but he climbed onto the back seat anyway. His position at the bank required him to act with impeccable dignity. He wasn’t eager to walk through town looking a foul mess and smelling like a chamber pot.
