Great Summer Rreads Day Thirteen: Sea So Blue by Nichole Giles

Nichole Giles, author of the Descendant trilogy, and the Water So Deep series, has lived in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Texas.

She is a fan of all things paranormal and magical, and her dreams include raising a garden full of fairies, riding a unicorn, and taming the pet dragon she adopted at a local Convention.

She loves to spend time with her grown children and two grand-babies, travel to tropical and exotic destinations, drive with her convertible top down—even when it rains—and play music at full volume so she can sing along.

Caspian is looking for his mother. Snatched from the beach as a child and raised as a half-breed Mer-Prince in the long-lost city of Atlantis, his turn to rule is coming fast. Caspian learns that the Mer in Oceania have found a method to visit land—a practice forbidden in Atlantis—and later return to the sea. Unfortunately, the “magic” method involves poison so potent that only half-breeds with undamaged lungs can survive it. When his Sea King father forces Caspian’s engagement to a mermaid he can’t stand, Caspian decides it’s time to go in search of his human roots, and the woman who gave him life.

Elise has nothing left to lose, except the house she grew up in and a beat-up classic car her father had intended to restore. While her friends leave home for college and abroad, she’s stuck waitressing at The Sea Turtle, begging for enough hours to pay her power bill, and using her lunch breaks to place flowers on her parents’ graves. Not only is she not looking for love—she’s not even looking for friendship. Loss is something she knows too much of, and she can’t survive any more. But when she finds a mysterious stranger wandering the cemetery, she takes pity on the pathetic soul and brings him to her work where she can feed him a solid meal.

The innocent meeting turns into an unbreakable bond, and sets off a chain of events that leaves them both questioning their place in the world—be it land or sea—and discovering just how essential love and family can be.

Q&A With the Author:

1.  When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author?

I started writing about the time my youngest child started preschool. Looking back, I think I was searching for something of my own, since I’d finally gotten past the baby/toddler/diaper phase of motherhood. I’d always been a huge reader, and exceptional with my English skills, so when I came across an online writing class, I took it, just for fun. And then I found my first writing conference, and it kind of snowballed from there.

2.  What is your favorite writing snack?

It really depends on my mood. I have a hard time typing and eating at the same time, especially because I do all my writing on a laptop. But I do get snacky here and there, so usually it’s something easy to grab, and okay to have sit for a while if I strike a good vein on my WIP. Fruit, cheese, crackers, nuts—stuff like that. And occasionally gummy candies, because-obviously!

3.  If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? Why? What food would you serve?

Elise from Sea So Blue. I think I’d serve her snow crab (obvs) because it’s her favorite, and mine too. And I’d tell her that grief is temporary, and encourage her to be happy while she can. (Is that vague enough without being spoilery?)

4.  Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

Oh man. This one actually required a LOT of research. I learned to scuba dive (and did it in the ocean a few times), studied whales and went whale watching, learned about the most dangerous creatures in the sea, and the most poisonous. I had to check facts about criminal procedures with a missing persons’ (thought to be a murder investigation) and what would happen if police suspect foul play but don’t have a body, and also I had to use my knowledge of driving a boat, and learn about a different type than mine. There’s probably more, but that’s a long enough list, I think.

5.  How do you relax, or what do you enjoy doing when you are not writing?

If it’s summer, I’m usually out on the lake on our boat. Or near a beach somewhere. Wherever there is water, that’s where I want to be. In the winter, we have snow where I live, so that’s a lot harder. Usually I’m either home reading and enjoying my family, or shopping, because that’s where I go to get out of the house when it’s cold (and I can’t take cold very well).

6. What advice would you give someone who wants to write a book some day?

No matter how you choose to pursue publishing, study the craft of writing well over and over again. Practice, and never stop practicing, studying, and learning. And never give up just because you get rejected or have a bad review. OH, also, don’t read the reviews!

Valentine Countdown Blitz Day Five: The Lilac Plague by Kristin J. Dawson

Kristin J. Dawson is a non-recovering chocolate and romantic English movie addict who loves to read science fiction and fantasy. You can find her most often indulging her favorite things at 2 am -- night owls unite!

Kristin writes high fantasy with political intrigue, a bit of romance, and of course, magic. When she's not writing, toting her kids around to sports practices, or cleaning out the chicken coop, she's probably trying to talk her friends into more shenanigans.

An oath betrayed. A centuries-long curse.
A kingdom teetering on the edge of destruction.

In a world of magic, Nicoleta is unremarkable, except for her cursed, stuttering tongue. No special powers, no renowned apprenticeship, just the terrible, stammering aftereffects of the Lilac Plague.

Until she opens the ghostly blue vision from her mother.

Instead of words of endearment, the vision reveals that Nicoleta’s mother was a Guardian entrusted with a magical key — a key so powerful that those who rule will do anything to find it.

The burden of protecting the key now falls to Nicoleta. In a race against the crown, she must find the treasure and the true heir, the only one who can stop the curse from being fulfilled. Impossible? Almost certainly. One false step spells disaster. But Nicoleta is no fool. Where those before her died trying, Nicoleta forges a new path, relying on her wits and some unlikely allies.

Do you dare face the Lilac Plague? This coming of age, young adult fantasy adventure with mysterious magic, evil emperors, and a thread of romance will leave you amazed and clamoring for the next book."

Q&A With the Author:

1.Why do you choose to write romance? Do you write any other genres?
I write fantasy romance, with an emphasis on fantasy. The romance is a subplot in my book. I love writing fantastical worlds, magic systems, and creating nuanced characters. I also write science fiction, but usually in short story form.

2.How long does it take you to write a book, typically?  It takes me about 18 months from start to finish to write a book. The writing of the story doesn't take very long. For me, it's the editing process - that's the lion's share of the book creation time.

3.Since a lot of romance books show both male and female perspectives, share with us the most difficult thing about writing the perspective of the opposite gender? In my critique group, I've had several male counterparts. The one thing that still sticks with me, that makes me laugh, is how emphatic they were that a male character would NOT notice a woman's eye color. They were in 100% agreement on this. To this day, I still think a man should notice a woman's eye color! haha!

4.What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? I often write with a bag of peanut butter m&m's next to my desk when I'm editing. Doing edits on a massive, epic novel series is hard work. So I tell myself... I'm earning this! ;)

5.Tell us a bit about a future project you are working on? Do you have any little sneak peeks you can share? I'm working on the third book in The Unchosen Trilogy right now. Afterward, I have three other projects in the pipeline. I am trying not to focus on any of them until I have this current series wrapped up. The story has taken me many years to put together, so it deserves all my focus until the end. All I can say is that all three of them have fairies in them. One of them is a middle-grade series (with no romance), but the other two are young adult with romantic subplots!

6.What is the most romantic date you have ever been on? Or, what is your idea of the perfect Valentine Date? The most romantic date I've ever been on was actually one of the most clever I've ever been on. My date took me on a little hike, and at the end was a candlelight dinner and Chinese food set out. I was like, "Oh my gosh, someone is having a date here. We are totally in their space. We should go!" He grinned, and it dawned on me that it was for us. I'm very low-key, so expensive gifts, or grand gestures aren't for me. He had just the perfect mix of chill-fun-attitude and thoughtfulness!

Christmas Countdown Blitz Day Six: The Miracle of Joie by Betsy Love

Betsy Love has loved to write from the moment she could hold a pen and has been creating stories ever since she was in elementary school. Her high school creative writing teacher told her that one day she would be published.

When not sitting at her computer pouring her heart and soul into her novels, she loves going to her mountain property for inspiration and to escape the desert heat. She loves spending time with her family. At last count she has 20 grandchildren, has given up on gardening. If she had a horse, she might give up writing.

Joie, an over-confident rookie elf, is on her first assignment.

Its one week before Christmas, and she must find a mother for eight-year-old Emily. Not an easy task, since Emilys grieving father, Matt, is not ready for marriage. Hes still bitter about the accident that killed his wife and handicapped his daughter.

When events turn Joie into a human, she loses her magic and must use her ingenuity to heal the broken family. How could falling love be the answer?

Snippet:

Joie hadnt meant to frighten Adam so badly that he had sent his truck careening over the edge. Wow, she didnt even realize shed been invisible. Then again, if hed seen her in her elf form, he might have been even more frightened. Shed just meant to whisper in his ear. Sometimes Joie forgot how loud her voice could be. When she got excited, she simply couldnt help it.
Biting her lower lip, she stood outside the passenger door. There had to be a better way to introduce herself and explain her mission. Around her wrist hung the miracle bracelet Mrs. Claus had given her. Five charms a snowman, ice skates, an angel, and a miniature snow globe, and a candy cane hung from the silver links. She stroked the snowman. Was this a good time to use one of the miracles enveloped by the charm?

Autumn Cowntdown Blitz Day 2: Mrs. Murray's Hidden Treasure by Emily-Jane Hills Orford

An avid gardener, artist, musician and writer, Emily-Jane Hills Orford has fond memories and lots of stories that evolved from a childhood growing up in a haunted Victorian mansion.

Told she had a ‘vivid imagination’, the author used this talent to create stories in her head to pass tedious hours while sick, waiting in a doctor’s office, listening to a teacher drone on about something she already knew, or enduring the long, stuffy family car rides. The author lived her stories in her head, allowing her imagination to lead her into a different world, one of her own making. As the author grew up, these stories, imaginings and fantasies took to the written form and, over the years, she developed a reputation for telling a good story.

Emily-Jane can now boast that she is an award-winning author of several books, including King Henry’s Choice (Clean Reads 2019), Mrs. Murray’s Ghost (Telltale Publishing 2018), Mrs. Murray’s Hidden Treasure (Telltale Publishing 2019), Queen Mary’s Daughter (Clean Reads 2018), Gerlinda (CFA 2016) which received an Honorable Mention in the 2016 Readers’ Favorite Book Awards, To Be a Duke (CFA 2014) which was named Finalist and Silver Medalist in the 2015 Next Generation Indie Book Awards and received an Honorable Mention in the 2015 Readers’ Favorite Book Awards and several other books.

A retired teacher of music and creative writing, she writes about the extra-ordinary in life and her books, short stories, and articles are receiving considerable attention. For more information on the author, check out her website at: http://emilyjanebooks.ca

There is a hidden treasure in the grand old mansion on Piccadilly Street, in a place called London, but not the real London of English fame. There’s also a lot of mystery and a murder that’s been unsolved for decades. But it’s the treasure that captures Mary’s interest.

Mary lives in this house along with her family, her Brownie friends and a ghost. When the ghost reveals her secret about the hidden treasure, there’s no stopping Mary, her Brownie friends, or her enemies from searching for this treasure.

Why the intrigue? Apparently there’s a little bit of magic connected to this treasure. And so the adventure begins. Who will find the treasure first?

Snippet:

“Ah! So this is where it’s hidden.” It was the unmistakeable voice of Miss Penelope. The girls shuddered as Mrs. Murray faded into the fireplace and disappeared. Brunny and Briddie turned around slowly to face their opponent. Mary hesitated before taking a cautious, timid look over her shoulder. Rosie moved closer to her friend and looked as well. There she was, in all her evil splendor, Elizabeth and Stocky standing on either side of her.

“And you thought I wouldn’t be watching.” She cackled loudly. Not the cackle that Mrs. Murray did when she tried to laugh, but a distinctly evil cackle that sent shivers up and down Mary’s spine.

Snippet:

Are you quite sure about this, Taran?” Cal’s voice echoed in the gloom as Taran Elijah closed the cellar door behind them. He raised the lantern and sharp-edged shadows fled up the walls.
Taran glanced at his Apprentice standing three steps below him and ran a hand through his short brown hair. It came away clammy and he wiped it on his shirt. “I have to go, Cal. It’s my last chance.”
Cal frowned, taking in Taran’s tall but sturdy frame, clad in leather pants and boots, the sword belted at his side and the pack of supplies slung over his shoulder. He met Taran’s hazel eyes. “What if there’s something we haven’t thought of ?”

Trying to keep his voice level, Taran said, “I’ve tried every way I can think of to find another teacher. My father was right, there simply aren’t any Artesans left in Loxton Province. Maybe even in the whole of Albia. Entering the Fifth Realm might be dangerous, but it’s the only place I’m going to find other members of our craft.”
