Book Review: Eight Birds for Christmas

This time around I am reviewing the fabulous novella, Eight Birds For Christmas, by Tara Mayoros.

I'd like to start out by offering a quick blurb about the book.

In the Christmas novella Eight Birds for Christmas, a Holiday funeral sends Laidan into a dormancy of sadness. Holed up in her mother's lake house with her best friend and her bodyguard, birds appear one by one as gifts that help her through a time of grieving. Each birds carries with it a word and a hope that things will begin to look up.
Hurt from the realization that the rock star life Laidan led had made her selfish, the birds reveal forgotten memories and glimpses into how she can become a better person. It will take confronting her past to make peace with her future. By taking to heart the gifts the birds bring, Laidan begins to realize the true meaning of Christmas and that there are other ways that she can share her song.

Doesn't that sound just fantastic? I know that I was intrigued by that description.

And now here's my two cent's worth about the story.

Eight Birds For Christmas was an enlightening journey through one woman's grief after losing her mother only days before Christmas.  Tara's descriptions are amazingly clear, painting the perfect picture of the winter wonderland Laidan inhabits, reminding us that there is beauty amid tragedy. Her attention to detail is nothing short of amazing, especially when it comes to helping the reader understand the depth of Laidan's emotional turmoil.

The characters are intriguing and full of depth, even the ones who don't see much "light" in the story. Her way of writing and creating these characters makes them approachable in ways that other writers haven't yet managed to achieve.

As Tara constructs the world of show business, it is easy to feel the hassle and stress associated with that lifestyle. It gives us all a taste of the limelight, and the shadows, in ways we may not have done so before. It is both is both refreshing and mind bloggling.

The prose flows smoothly, with nary a hitch in the writing style. i was immediately pulled in and wanted more once I was finished reading. I will definitely be checking out the sequel to this story, Broken Smiles. And I highly recommend that everyone do the same.

Five out of five stars from me.

Now that you know my thoughts on the story, here's a bit about the amazing woman behind the writing of it.
