Book Blitz: The Shadow of the Tudor Rose by Wendy Leighton-Porter

A graduate of Exeter University in the early 1980s, I spent 20 years as a teacher of French, Latin and Classical studies, before a change of career led me to writing children's fiction. Currently residing in Abu Dhabi, I live with my husband and our beautiful Tonkinese cat.

The Shadow of Atlantis is the first in a series of time-travel adventures, featuring 3 children and a rather special cat called Max. I'm now working on the 17th book, The Shadow of the Great Fire. The series also includes several novellas that feature Max the talking Tonkinese cat undertaking solo adventures. As I take my young readers on a magical mystery tour through the past, I'm hoping that my love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them too.

In 1588, a plot to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth the First is about to unfold. At this crucial moment in English history, four visitors from the future arrive in Elizabethan London.

Twins Joe and Jemima Lancelot, together with their friend Charlie and their talking cat Max, embark upon their next journey into the past as they continue the search for their missing parents who are lost somewhere in the mists of time.

Finding themselves at the heart of a web of conspiracy, can the young time-travellers solve the mystery of the Tudor Rose?

Character Casting:

The characters in my series of books

There are four main characters in my series:
Eleven-year-old twins Jemima and Joe Lancelot; their best friend from next door, Charlie Green; and my favourite character, Max the talking Tonkinese cat.

Jemima and Joe have lost their parents who vanished in mysterious circumstances. With their parents missing, the twins are sent to live with their father’s brother, Richard Lancelot, a confirmed bachelor. Uncle Richard, a professor of ancient history and archaeology at the University of London, has no experience of bringing up children and, although he loves his niece and nephew dearly, he has a steep learning curve ahead of him. The loss of their parents and their move to London are tough for the twins, and they find it hard to adjust until, one day, they discover something that gives them hope – their parents travelled back in time through the portal of an ancient book, but left behind the key that would bring them home. Jemima now has that key, and so the children embark upon a quest to find them, searching through the pages of history. The twins share a close bond but their characters are quite different.
Jemima is sensitive and caring but, with a tendency to speak her mind, she has a temper when provoked. She adores Max and is fiercely protective of him.
Joe is more laid-back, but has an impetuous, reckless streak, sometimes acting without thinking.

Charlie, whose parents are divorced, hasn’t had many friends before and was always something of a loner before the twins moved in next door. Exceptionally clever, he’s a bit of a geek and has suffered a lot of teasing at school. His marked resemblance to the fictional character of Harry Potter, complete with round glasses, didn’t help. Since becoming friends with the twins and joining them on their time-travelling expeditions, Charlie emerges from his shell and his self-confidence grows. His amazing brainwaves and encyclopaedic knowledge make him a vital member of the group.

Max, short for Maximus, is an exceptionally large but devastatingly handsome lilac Tonkinese cat with aquamarine eyes. Everyone he meets falls for his charms, but he has a unique ability for a cat. With a magic owl charm that he wears on his collar, he can speak and understand human speech. The character of Max brings an element of humour to the stories, thanks to his grouchy one-liners, his clumsiness and tendency to get into scrapes. There is also something extra-special about Max, but I’m not going to let you into the secret here – it’s too much of a spoiler!
If my stories were made into films, I can just imagine an animatronic version of Max stealing the limelight!

Great Summer Reads day 17: The Three Crowns Series (Seven Books and Free Novella)/Kindle Edition by Sonya Ray

I grew up in Southeast Missouri; home of the Throwed Rolls, high cotton, and the St. Louis Cardinals. I have a little family consisting of son, daughter, son-in-law and a little Pi. Other than my children (and grandchild), my passion is writing. My current project is The Three Crowns Series. Sweet Tea is the first book in this seven-novel series which published October 15, 2013.

Besides reading and writing, I enjoy singing. I love music period. Music is in our family. Whether it be the bluegrass from the Ozarks that my Grandpa Sutton use to play on his banjo or fiddle, or the smooth, family harmony in which I am fortunate enough to sing with my Dad and Brother. But you can give me some kickin' AC/DC too! I like it all!

I work full-time as an Administrative Assistant. Every free moment is dedicated to my family and my current project, The Three Crowns, a seven-novel paranormal romance series.

It all starts with a Queen and a Plan.

The Three Crowns is a New Adult/Paranormal Romance series. There are seven books to complete the series, with a novella. This series has your modern day vampires dealing with the Old World Laws creating a struggle for ultimate power in the Night World.

THE THREE CROWNS SERIES SYNOPSIS

The Three Crowns series is about a normal girl whose life is more than what she will allow herself to imagine. It is the journey of her accepting that everything is not black and white, and our logic of what we understand does not mean something does exist. Throughout the story she is protected, loved, groomed and pushed to her limits to prepare her for what lies ahead of her. She is tested in all areas of her humanity which will someday bring her to know the person she is destined to be. The human nature of love is a tangled web of emotions for she feels the love of two men who are continually being taken away from her for the sake of their positions in the future as well.

Snippet:

My legs and arms kicked and thrashed at the air. Until finally…thud. I landed hard. I couldn’t see! Something was attacking me! I kicked and punched to get away from it!
“No! No! No!”
I was not ready for my head to be cut off! But I was sure fixing to rip someone’s face off if they didn’t get away from me! I felt my face flush with anger. They didn’t want any of what I was fixing to dish out!
I finally fought the thing off of me and gasped, as my eyes flew open.  I was breathing heavily as I looked around, taking everything in. My heart was still pounding.
But…I was safe in my room on the floor next to my bed. I looked down at my would-be attacker and swallowed hard. It was my down comforter. I bit my bottom lip and quickly stood up, throwing my comforter back on the bed. I put my hands on my hips and thought about the dream. No. Nightmare! But it was just a dream. I ran my hand through my long dark hair and exhaled.
I gave my comforter a masterful smile. “I told you not to mess with me.”
My phone started vibrating on the nightstand. Fearing the worst, I looked at my clock. Great! Today was the first day of school and it was 7:55! No doubt about it, I was going to be late!
As I jumped in the Mustang and headed down the road, my dream came back to me. It had really freaked me out (not so much the wrestling with my comforter). Everything was so detailed. Thoughts of the silver and red eyes in the smoke made chills crawl up my body. My heart started pounding as the horrifying scene filled my mind. I had to put the dream out of my head. I didn’t want to keep seeing headless bodies—geez! And the fear. The fear was like a force in itself.  It surrounded me. I could feel its darkness as though it was hiding in the shadows waiting to collect me. All of me. I shuddered and found myself gripping the steering wheel as the feeling of darkness returned to me from the dream.  I had to shake this off. It was a dream—only a dream. The guy in my nightmare who was trying to save me came to mind. Who was he? I could still see him so plainly, and remembered feeling I knew him, but in real life I had never seen that guy. I scanned through the dream one last time, then tucked it away—deep. I had several dreams similar to this one that were stored away never to be thought of again (if I could help it!).

Little did I know that one day, this dream (nightmare) would be reality.

Great Summer Reads Day 8: Storm Child by Melanie Mason

Melanie is an author, designer, photographer, and flight attendant all rolled into one. She has told stories all her life and finds her passion in sharing the plots that spin through her head. She now lives in Portland, Oregon, with her two dachshund-chihuahua dogs. She loves the beauty of the Pacific Northwest that feeds her imagination.

When no one is listening, Melanie loves to belt Broadway songs in her living room and car. Someday she hopes to be on a flight where someone is reading her book.

To escape capture by Imperial soldiers, 16-year-old Eridale Storm leaves the only home she’s ever known and drags her younger sister into the wilds of Mericon—the Empire that formed when America collapsed. Hoping to find safety with their mother who disappeared when Eridale was three, the girls follow clues that lead them across the country, but the empire hounds their every step.

The journey draws Eridale deeper into the conflict between the Empire and the rebel Freedom Fighters, producing questions about Eridale’s heritage, questions no one wants to answer.

Caught between the threads of deception, rebellion, and betrayal, Eridale struggles to find out who she is. The answers she finds could lead the country back to freedom or shackle them under the imperial throne forever.

This is book 1 of a 4 book series and not a stand-alone book.

Snippet:

“Who’s there?” I call out.
            No one answers.
“I know you’re there.” My announcement is ignored. Alone, unarmed, and naked, I’m not much of a force to reckon with.
I move silently through the water, keeping only my head above the surface until I reach the edge of the pool where I left my robe. Though I’m still in the water, I pull my robe in and wrap it around my body before moving back into the steam.

Seconds tick by, and my heart hammers in my chest. I move to the right and hear the tiniest whoosh. A pinch in my neck brings my hand up, and a small dart falls into my palm. My brows furrow for a second before the room starts spinning. I slosh through the water, trying to reach the edge, and my legs give out. Water envelopes my body, and darkness claims me. My last cognizant thought is I’m going to drown

Excerpt

“Crap!” Walter uttered as he bent to retrieve the upside down box. Its hinges strained in protest. The velvet insert fell from inside as he picked up the object. A folded piece of parchment fell. The two pieces of wood had sandwiched it in place until now.
Putting the broken box aside, Walter picked up the yellowing paper. It crackled but didn’t break. “Hello,” he said as he felt the hand-pulped paper. “What’s this?” Using extreme care, he placed the parchment on the desk near the window and unfolded it. His eyes widened as he did.
The ink had aged to a mix of brown and black, but there was no mistaking the contents. A map of the continent sprawled across the space. He could tell by the depicted topography that it was at least several generations old. The details were sparse in areas. Despite that, it provided more than enough to identify major points of interest. Upon further inspection, Walter saw an inscription had been added to the upper corner.
“Double crap!” Walter almost ripped the page refolding it. “Tyler needs to see this.”
