Marie never expected to wake up in North Pole City, let alone being made Santa’s Emergency Replacement. It was a job she never wanted but couldn’t turn down, thanks to Clarence, Santa’s right hand man.

Now, Marie has to work with Clarence, who believes she is some kind of criminal who will cause the destruction of everything he holds dear. Trying to prove that he’s wrong, Marie keeps making mistakes that push them even further apart. It doesn’t help that she has a past she’d rather keep hidden. However, trying to keep her past where it should belong isn’t easy.

Just when Marie starts to feel like things are coming together, a madman with a bone to pick, and Christmas to ruin, threatens the whole of the North Pole Organization. Marie must rely on Clarence and her new friends to help her face her past before Christmas is gone forever.  But does she have the courage to truly be herself when it could mean losing everything?

"E-two to C-one! Do you copy? Over."

Clarence shakily pulled out the device and thumbed the transmit button. "C-one here. What's the problem? Over."

Static sounded over the frequency as he released the talk button. He waited almost impatiently for a response, not liking the tone in Dena's voice. "We have a code seven. Repeat, a code seven. We'll meet in the usual place. Over," Dena's voice crackled.

"I'm on my way. Over and out." The radio gave one last burst of static as Clarence put it back in his pocket. He shook slightly as he stepped down from the running board. He couldn't help but remember a similar set of circumstances several years ago. Those circumstances had led to the death of one of his closest friends. He forced himself to stop trembling once his feet hit the cold ground. He had a job to do right now, and his personal life could not interfere, nor could his growing fear. He'd been trained too well. These feelings had to wait.

He turned to Marie with an unreadable expression. "Take the reindeer back to the stable, then go find Sandra." Without another word, he ran to a side entrance that led to the city, vanishing into the shadows.

Marie watched him leave, whistling a command to the reindeer. They ran to a high dune and disappeared. A growing fear beat against her chest; one she could almost put a name to.

Snippet:

The bullet struck just left of her chest, near the shoulder blade. She lost balance, twisting from the force. With eyes wide open in shock, she stared at the man who had taken everything away, her freedom, her family, and now, her life. Her feet continued to twist as her head whipped around, sending her over the roof's edge as thunder rumbled through the air. A scream of agony was forced through frozen lips, and then was silenced as the rain came pouring down.

Q and A with the Author:

1.      Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Golly, I've been writing for as long as I've known how to write. I still have some stories I wrote back in elementary school because my mom saved them. I think what interested me in writing was being able to tell a story without having to use my voice, being able to paint a picture with words.

2.      Give us an insight into how your writing day/time is structured?

At present, my writing time is pretty unstructured. I write when my characters are willing to speak to me, and when I don't have to be at work. I usually end up writing at night and on the weekends, since, you know, the day job frowns on me writing while on the clock.

He left Marie's side and paced, trying to think of a sure-proof way to get her out of his hair. Maybe if he presented an idea that was so ludicrous he might get out of playing watchdog to some newcomer with no known past history. After all, it was possible that she was the criminal she denied to be. Or was that what he wanted? He didn't know. He hadn't been sure about anything since he'd first laid eyes on her.
"Why don't you just make her your Emergency Replacement instead of Sandra's assistant?" Clarence blurted. His words tumbled out before he could even think about the implications. "You've always wanted to have someone just in case of an emergency." His eyes sparkled with vexation, knowing he was being impertinent but not caring. He was sure Santa would never consider his suggestion with any seriousness.

Santa smoothed his beard. He measured the risks and the information his wizened eyes gave him. He included the intentions of his Head of Operations. He rubbed his chin, looked to one side, and nodded. "That's not a bad idea. It's nice to have someone. Just in case." He strode back to the desk and picked up a quill. "It does sound reasonable. All right, why don't we do just that? It will give her full access to all Leagues and privileges due to someone up that high. She'll pretty much be equal with you, Clarence." He gave his elf a knowing glance, eyes twinkling as he wrote down Marie's name and new position. The elf had played right into his hands, not that it had been all that hard to persuade him. They had both known the position was necessary and had discussed it at great lengths recently.

Clarence fell against the seat with a huff as Marie crashed into him, knocking the wind from his lungs. One of his arms automatically went around her waist to keep her from falling any further forward. He froze, eyes wide as he realized that his hand was encircling her with an almost tender touch.
Marie's eyes went wide in surprise as she found herself somehow on top of her companion, his arm around her waist. She was so shocked that all she could do was blink, her mind oddly free of all reason. His arm felt gentle around her. And intimate. It was more intimate than she'd allowed herself to get with anyone. It felt nice somehow.
Like someone had hit the play button, everything seemed to start back up again. Clarence noticed that several of the other passengers, and the elves outside of the trolley, were staring at them. He righted himself as he helped Marie back to her feet. He then brushed himself off in a very business-like manner. "You know, you really should watch where you're going," he commented in an almost snide manner.
Marie held her breath, mentally counting to ten before replying. She held back the equally snide comment that had popped into her head while calming down. "I'll keep that in mind." She took a seat next to him. She made sure there was enough room between them that they didn't touch. Turning abruptly away, her hair fanned out around her, hitting him squarely in the face.
Clarence held back a growl, deciding that her hair wasn't that pretty after all. He had to blink to keep his eyes from watering from the impact of the long strands. How could he have even thought it worth admiring, even for the smallest millisecond? Everything about this girl was lethal! He turned to face away from her, and any other possible attacks from that divine hair. He decided that the moment their rounds were over, he would take a much-needed disinfecting shower.
